The collection, a selection of his own paintings chosen by the artist, was published to celebrate David Shepherd’s 80th birthday. Andy Graves from Derry worked closely with the publisher, Chris Andrews, from the beginning of production.
The book was hand sewn and bound by Derry. It was hand bound in leather, vellum and finished with 22ct gold; it has been constructed to allow a natural and even opening of the pages whilst ensuring stability and strength required by a volume of this size and permanence.
Andy, a time served apprenticed bookbinder for over 30 years assisted the publisher by giving advice from the layout and make-up for printing and the grain direction of the paper to the selection of the leather and binding style. This ensured that the finished book could be bound with traditional hand bookbinding methods employed by Andy and the team at Derry Paper and Book Conservation Ltd.
The book has been produced to the highest specification and Derry are delighted that this has been recognised by winning the Spear’s Book Award.
